Poverty 101 Syllabus
How the Course Will be Run
The course is set up around weekly readings and activities. You will be able to login at any time during the day or night and participate in the class. Discussions, with the exception of chats, do not happen in real time, so if you ask a question, it may be a day or two before you get an answer. Generally, you will need to set aside some time each week to work on the course. If you need to miss a week, you can generally work ahead.
Required Reading
Students are required to purchase their own books.
- "Interpersonal Communication: Relating to Others" by Steven A Beebe, Susan J Beebe, Mark V Redmond
- "See Poverty ... Be The Difference" by Donna Beegle
System requirements
Just about any Internet capable computer will work for most things. Preferably, the minimum system would have Windows XP (or later) or Mac OS 10 (or later) with 512 MB of RAM (the more the better). For Windows users, it is a good idea to go to the Windows Update page to download and install the latest updates and fixes for your computer. Macintosh users can go to the Apple - MacOS Support website to check for the latest software releases.
It is highly recommended that you use a recent version of Microsoft Internet Explorer (v.6 or higher) or Firefox (version 2.0 or higher) web browser. It is good to have more than one browser installed on your computer.
Campus Edition and AOL
If you intend to use America Online (AOL) for web access to Campus Edition, you must first access the Internet with AOL, and then use one of the preferred browsers noted above. The only compatible AOL browser is version 9 or higher, with Internet Explorer 6.0 or higher also installed on your computer. Do not use earlier versions of AOL's browser, as you will have difficulty using many Campus Edition tools as well as it may interfere with attachments. If you have an older version of AOL, connect through AOL, but then minimize it and use Internet Explorer.
Whichever browser you use, make sure that Cookies, JavaScript, and Java have not been disabled.
There is a tech support site available and tech support to help with questions through Chemeketa Community College.
